Avoiding and Handling Harassment Claims - Encouraging Civility and Professionalism Within Your Workplace

As the list of powerful men taken down by claims of sexual assault and harassment continues to grow, businesses find themselves asking what they can do, should do and must do to protect themselves and their employees.  Following up on the power of the #metoo and #timesup movements, companies need to focus not only on preventing and responding to sexual impropriety, but more specifically on workplace civility, professionalism, and bystander responsibility. 

This interactive program will 1) Review the findings and recommendations of the EEOC Task Force on Sexual Harassment; 2) Discuss best practices for effective workplace training in light of the task force report and current events; and 3) Review other forms of workplace behavior which, although not necessarily illegal, can lead to low morale and lack of employee engagement and productivity. 

 About our Presenter

Charla Stevens is a Director and chair of the Employment Practice Group at the law firm of McLane Middleton Professional Association.  She also works in the Education and Health Care practice groups. She has extensive background addressing litigated and non-litigated employment issues such as discrimination, harassment, wrongful termination, protection of trade secrets, employee classification and wage and hour.  Charla litigates cases in the state and federal courts of New Hampshire and Massachusetts and before numerous state and federal administrative agencies, such as the state and federal Departments of Labor, the New Hampshire Commission for Human Rights, the Massachusetts Commission Against Discrimination, the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission and OSHA.  She has extensive experience conducting internal investigations for private employers, independent schools and colleges and universities.  She conducts supervisor, anti-harassment, boundaries and safe-school training and works with employers to maintain legal compliance in a cost-efficient and effective way.

Charla is the Vice-Chair of the NH Business and Industry Association’s Healthcare, HR & Workforce Development Policy Committee and a Past Director of the HR State Council of New Hampshire.  She was appointed by Governor Maggie Hassan to serve as Chair of the State Personnel Appeals Board.  She serves on the Public Interest Oversight Committee of the Boston Bar Association and has been recognized as a leading employment lawyer by Best Lawyers, Chambers USA, New England Super Lawyers and Martindale-Hubbell.
